Printer Not Printing? Basic Checks Before Replacing Ink or Toner
A safe first-check guide for common printing problems, without replacing supplies unnecessarily.
If a printer stops printing, begin with the message shown on its display or in the computer's print queue. Record the exact error rather than clearing it immediately. Check that the printer is powered on, ready and connected to the intended computer or network.
Confirm that the correct printer is selected and that the document is not paused or stuck in the print queue. Check the paper tray for correctly loaded paper and visible obstructions. Follow the manufacturer's instructions before opening access panels or removing jammed paper.
If print quality is poor, identify whether the issue affects black, colour or every page. Check the ink or toner level and make sure any newly installed consumable is the correct part number and is seated as instructed. Use the manufacturer's maintenance utility only as recommended; repeated cleaning cycles can consume ink.
If an error persists, there is unusual noise, a burning smell, a leak or a mechanical fault, stop and seek qualified support. Share the exact model, error code and steps already tried when requesting help.
